Color is described using three attributes:

• hue (the appearance of red, blue, green, or anything in between),
• tone (the relative lightness or darkness of a color)
  
• saturation (the relative strength or weakness of a color

​The color appearance of a gem is the result of a combination of these three attributes.

​​​Some diamonds contain mix of colors which can increase or decrease the diamond's value.
